Al Hajj

Al Hajj
Last year in 2010, I went to Al Hajj with my family. It was very difficult but at the same time it was so exciting. We prepared our bags and joined a campaign. We got new friends while on our trip who shared with us Al Hajj. We did all the rituals of Al Hajj.

Al Hajj is something that every Muslim must do if the opportunities are available like money, health and free time to go. There are three types of Al Hajj, individual Hajj, Al Kiran Hajj and Enjoyment Hajj and we used Enjoyment Hajj. First of all, we prepared our bags and drove to the airport; it was so crowded with people who were going to Al Hajj. Then we went inside the plane and started our trip; it took us three hours to get to KSA by plane. When we arrived at Jidda airport we took a bus and went to Mecca. After we arrived we put our bags in the hotel and we went to The Ka’bba and circled it seven times and prayed near to Ibrahim’s shrine. It’s an archaeological stone which shows his feet. Next, we went to Safa and Marwa which are two mountains and walked between them seven times. Late, we went back to the Hotel and took some rest. In the morning, we had our breakfast; we took a bus again and went to Mina and stayed at Mina Towers; they separated us into two sections, women section and men section and each section had rooms; we stayed in Mina for two days just attending lectures, praying and meeting new friends. Later after three days, we wore Al Ihram and went to Arafa at 4 am; we stayed there until the sunset; we made our tents and sat there for praying and attending lectures. Next we took the bus and went to Al Muzdalefah to get some stones for stoning then we went back to Mina. In the next day in the morning, we changed our clothes and cut our hair and went for stoning; we threw stones on three obstacles; they are three big holes that you throw seven stones on each one of them because it says the prophet Ibrahim threw seven stones on the devil in each one of them: minor obstacle, central obstacle and major obstacle. After that, we went to Mecca and did farewell cruising and Ifaadah Cruising around Al Ka’bba.

In the end, we went shopping in Mecca’s Mall and then we prepared our bags and went to the airport for going back home. It was a very difficult trip but at the same time it was so exciting; we met new friends, saw new things and got some experience. I really enjoyed our trip and I wish I could go there again in the future with my wife and kids.

Class Visit 23/10/2011 to Emirates Palace

We the elite class, CE1 visited the GCC Economic and Financial Integration Forum (Opportunities and Challenges) with Mr. Hedley on the morning of Sunday 23rd October. We registered and listened to the opening and welcoming speeches.
The first speech was about economic and financial integration and international experiences; it started at 9:30 to 11:00 am and was chaired by Dr. Jassim Al Mannai.

The first speaker was Dr Abdul Aziz Aluwaisheg. He spoke in English and he talked mainly about the historical developments and agreements made in recent years by GCC countries in their pursuit of freeing up trade and reducing tariffs in the GCC zone.

The second speaker was Lukas Stemitsiotis, and he addressed the problems and challenges facing the Eurozone. These problems at the moment, centring on Greece and the possibility of a Greek default on its debt, are particularly acute and the Eurozone countries are still struggling to find a solution.

The third speaker was Dr Aladdin Rillo, He spoke of the experiences of the Association of South East Asian Nations. He mentioned ASEAN’s Mutual Recognition Arrangements,. He pointed out that ASEAN was different to the EU and the GCC in that 50% of ASEAN GDP is provided by the service sector. He said that his goal was integration of capital markets, rather than a single currency. He pointed out that it was difficult for developed countries like Brunei and Singapore to share a currency with undeveloped countries like Laos and Cambodia. He said that in ASEAN the emphasis is on a single market and integration with the global economy. He stressed the importance of connectivity and equable economic development. He suggested that ASEAN was concentrating on integration of trade, while the GCC was leaning towards integration of finances. He was the briefest of the speakers and perhaps the one who dealt most with practicality rather than ideas and ideals.

The speech closed with a general discussion which proved to be more of a number of isolated statements rather than a genuine debate.

Hedley's trip to the Niah Caves

Thirty years ago, in 1980, Hedley went on a trip with his wife and elder daughter Kate to the Niah caves in Sarawak, Malaysia .

They started their trip from Brunei early in the morning by car; they had a very interesting, exciting and hard trip and they saw a lot of rare things during their trip; they faced a lot of problems during the trip; they didn't find any place to sleep or to eat because there were no restaurants and hotels those days so they took their food with them. They drove to the border of Sarawak, then they crossed two large rivers by a big ferry and had their lunch in Miri and continued to Niah. They hired a small boat and sailed to a government house to rest and spend the night there. They had their dinner with a small group of scientists. It was a remote and terrible place deep in the jungle so they acquired an experience. In the morning, they continued their trip on foot until they reached the Niah caves. Inside the caves they saw birds nests and some men climbing to scrape birds nests off the roof, collecting them and selling them to the Chinese because the Chinese were making bird's nest soup.

In the afternoon, they prepared their things and said goodbye to their new friends in the house and drove back home. They had a very hard adventure but at the same time it was very interesting and exciting; it was amazing; they would never forget those moments.
